The Kirchmann Family

Jean Kirchmann married Françoise Bourg around 1810 in Lorraine, France. They raised at least six children in the town of Carling, Moselle, Lorraine: Nicholas, Jacob, Catherine, Anne-Marie, Marguerite, and Jean. Jacob and Jean remained in Carling throughout their lives, while the rest of the children emigrated to America. This region of Europe, known as Alsace-Lorraine, was undergoing rapid population expansion as a result of occupation by foreign forces. The population increased to over 1,000,000 people in 1846, leading to a desperate economic situation marked by food shortages, lack of work, and therefore great poverty. Many people left the area during this period, including Nicholas Kirchmann and Thérèse Nussbaum.

Thérèse Nussbaum (or Nusbaum) was born August 6, 1820 in Rosbruck, Moselle, Lorraine, France to Pierre Nussbaum and Thérèse Houchard. Thérèse and Pierre had at least three children: Joseph, Thérèse, and Marguerite. Joseph and Marguerite remained in the Moselle area for the rest of their lives, Thérèse Nussbaum emigrated to America.

Thérèse Nussbaum and Nicholas Kirchmann were married on August 1, 1846 at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Buffalo, New York. They settled in the Erie County town of Swormville, where they raised nine children on their farm. They are buried in the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Swormville.
